Hello, everyone! Welcome back to our By Bonnie blog, where we talk about all things diamonds! Today, we'll dive into a diamond shape that deserves more attention – the marquise. While pear-shaped diamonds have gained popularity in recent years, the marquise is making a comeback.
We'll compare marquise diamonds with various wedding bands and explore Halo versus non-Halo designs. If you've been considering a marquise shape, you're in for a treat. This stunning marquise diamond ring has left me speechless and made me reconsider my choices. Let's not keep you waiting any longer – let's dive into the details!
This magnificent marquise diamond ring weighs in at 3.20 carats and it really is a sight worth seeing.
When the bride and groom initially contacted us with their heart set on a marquise diamond, we were thrilled. As we embarked on the curation process, searching for diamonds in the 2 to 3 carat range, something remarkable happened. The bride absolutely fell in love with this stunning 3.2-carat marquise diamond.
It's worth noting that the "diamond shrinkage factor" is real. When you first lay eyes on a new, dazzling ring, you might think, "Wow, this is huge!" But over time, your diamond seems to shrink the more accustomed you get to it. Our advice– factor that in and go a little bit bigger.
Now, let's delve into marquise diamonds. For those unfamiliar with this unique shape, it's essentially shaped like an elongated oval with pointed ends. When it comes to marquise diamonds, one crucial factor to consider is the length-to-width ratio, a concept I often emphasize for oval and pear-shaped diamonds.
Marquise diamonds can have ratios ranging anywhere from 1.7 to around 2.5.
This impressive 3.20ct marquise diamond comes in at a 1.85 ratio and boasts an E color grade, and VS1 clarity.
The bride's preference was for slender marquise diamonds on the sides of her ring. However, I advised her on the importance of balance. While she was initially interested in a thin band, I knew that this diamond needed more support. To maintain structural integrity, I recommended the addition of platinum prongs to highlight the stone's brilliance.
The final design is a testament to both finger coverage and uniqueness. Another thoughtful design element was the consideration of comfort. She didn't want to feel marquise diamonds between her fingers
As a result, we positioned only two marquise diamonds on each side, ensuring comfort without compromising aesthetics.
For those contemplating a marquise diamond, this one is set in a hidden halo. When viewed from the side, you'll notice the side diamonds add extra sparkle. A vital point to remember about marquise diamonds is their elongated shape, which requires proper bottom support for durability and beauty.
We've also recently created a smaller carat version that you can see right here.
This beauty features a 0.75ct center stone, and my client wanted to elevate its elegance. We successfully achieved that by preserving the elongated ratio she favored. The center stone in the smaller carat version has a 2.5 ratio, and it's accented by halo diamonds on the outside, enhancing the overall aesthetic. Additionally, we added two small marquise diamonds, creating a delightful fusion of a three-stone ring with a halo.
The result is an exquisite, delicate ring that strikes the perfect balance on her finger. It goes to show that impressive rings don't always need to be three carats or more; even something under 1ct can become truly remarkable with the addition of a halo, offering excellent finger coverage.
And as I've discussed in my recent videos about smaller carat diamonds (which you can watch here), it's beneficial to opt for an elongated shape that provides more finger coverage.
When it comes to choosing a wedding band for this ring, I think going with a marquise-on-marquise might be a bit overwhelming. So, I selected a shared prong crown-cut band to complement this ring.
You can certainly choose a wider millimeter band, but I wanted the stunning marquise to take center stage without an overly thick band.
For those wondering about suitable wedding bands, you can also opt for something like this gorgeous contour V-shape band, which complements the marquise shape beautifully.
The pointed design of this band aligns with the marquise, creating a cohesive and completed look.
Additionally, you have the option to incorporate larger diamonds on this wedding band for added sparkle. There's plenty of flexibility to mix and match styles and create a unique sense of fashion. Another important consideration when selecting a marquise diamond is the presence of a bow-tie, which you'll want to watch out for. Now, what is the bow-tie effect?
For those of you wondering about the bow-tie effect, I've discussed it in some of my blogs and Youtube videos. But for those of you who are new here, elongated shapes like the marquise often exhibit this effect to varying degrees.
In our ring, you'll notice that the bow ties are minimal, thanks to our meticulous curation process. We carefully examine and compare different stones to select one with the least noticeable bow-tie effect.
This aspect can be challenging to assess through online videos since you're essentially viewing the stone in a spinning video without experiencing its appearance under various lighting conditions.
In conclusion, the marquise diamond, with its timeless elegance and unique shape, has resurfaced as a captivating choice for engagement rings. Its slender, elongated profile offers a chic and sophisticated look that complements a variety of wedding bands.
Whether you prefer a traditional or modern style, the marquise diamond is a perfect canvas for creating a one-of-a-kind ring. As we embrace the revival of this classic shape, we invite you to explore our exquisite marquise diamonds and discover the endless possibilities for your dream ring.
